Sauvignon Blanc Gamlitz hand-harvested from the Sattlerhof Estate
The Sauvignon Blanc Gamlitz from the Sattlerhof winery is an "Ortswein" (village wine) from the 2022 vintage, grown on crystalline quartz sands high above the village. Manual labor on the steep slopes and a cool microclimate shape it more than any trend currently sweeping through wine shelves.
Sauvignon Blanc Gamlitz is the dry village-level wine from the Sattler family estate, positioned within the Styrian origin pyramid between the regional wine and the single-vineyard wines. Alexander Sattler and his brother farm 33 hectares around Gamlitz and Sernau. The vines for this wine are between 15 and 35 years old and are rooted 350 to 450 meters above sea level.
Green spice, bright fruit, and cool length
Styrian Sauvignon Blanc thrives on the tension between green herbal spice and bright, cool fruit. The village wine from Gamlitz moves exactly in this middle ground without veering to one side or the other.
It is dry without a trace of sweetness, leaving the palate feeling cleansed rather than coated. Like all wines of this style, it benefits from a few minutes of air to transition from freshness to spice. A well-chilled glass keeps it alert, while one that is too cold strips away its contours.
The 2022 vintage now has a few years under its belt, and it wears them well. Over time, wines of this caliber trade their herbaceous edge for yellower, calmer tones without the acidity losing its structure. When you open a bottle like this, patience in the glass is far more rewarding than haste.
A set table for fish and vegetables
Pan-seared char with brown butter is an obvious pairing, as both sides rely on acidity and herbs. An herb omelet or a frittata with spring onions also complements this cool spice effortlessly.
In Styria, such a wine is often served alongside fried chicken and a salad with pumpkin seed oil, and there is a solid reason for this pairing. The dark oil needs a counterpart that won't immediately back down. Boiled beef with apple horseradish follows the same pattern.
Anyone who compares this with a younger vintage in the glass will quickly notice what a few years of bottle rest can do for a wine. The one jumps at you, while the other has found its composure.
Hand-harvested on slopes with no room for machines
The vineyards around Gamlitz are so steep that every single row must be worked by hand. Harvesting is selective, grape by grape, and anything not yet fully ripe is simply left on the vine.
The soil consists of crystalline quartz sands with mica, which allow water to drain away quickly. Vines that have stood in the same spot for 15 years or more handle this better than younger plantings because their roots have long since reached the depths. Barren sand, cool nights, and intensive manual labor combine to create the clarity for which Southern Styria is known.
From the 2021 vintage onwards, every wine from the family bears a biodynamic certification, and this one is among the first to carry that mark.
