Weingut Fred Loimer, Biodynamics and Elegance from the Kamptal
The Fred Loimer winery in Langenlois is one of the great names in the Kamptal region. Fred Loimer produces biodynamic terroir wines, award-winning sparkling wines, and idiosyncratic natural wines—all rooted in a respect for the soil, the vine, and the human element. It is a winery that combines tradition and innovation in a rare way.
Weingut Fred Loimer stands for biodynamic wines from Austria's Kamptal region. From his striking black cube in Langenlois, Fred Loimer manages around 85 hectares in Langenlois and Gumpoldskirchen—with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling at his heart, alongside Pinot Noir, orange wines, and award-winning Sekt. As a co-founder of the "respekt-BIODYN" association, he works to even stricter standards than many organic certifications require.
1998: Fred takes over and breaks with convention
In 1998, Fred Loimer took over his father's winery in Langenlois—and went his own way from day one.
Instead of the wine romanticism common at the time, he opted for clear, minimalist labels that had little to do with the tastes of the era. He also turned to architecture: in 2000, he had a minimalist black cube built over a 150-year-old, hand-dug loess cellar. To this day, this building defines the winery’s image—tradition underground, clear modernism above.
In 2006, Fred converted his vineyards to biodynamic cultivation. A year later, he and like-minded colleagues founded "respekt-BIODYN," an association he deemed more important than the Demeter seal because it imposes stricter standards on both vineyard and cellar. Since then, biodynamics has not just been a label, but a daily practice that has made the winery one of the best in Austria.
Veltliner, Riesling, and the entire Kamptal
The focus of the assortment is on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, supplemented by Pinot Noir, orange wines, sparkling wine, and non-alcoholic refreshments.
The entry point is the fresh Grüner Veltliner Kamptal, one level above is the village wine from Langenlois, and at the top are the grand crus (Erste Lagen). The multiple award-winning Grüner Veltliner Käferberg comes from an Erste Lage, as does the mineral-driven Loiserberg. Riesling is Fred’s secret love—the aged reserve Riesling Steinmassl shows what the Steinmassl, Seeberg, and Heiligenstein sites are capable of.
Around one-fifth of the area is reserved for red varieties. This results in elegant, nimble Pinot Noirs such as the Pinot Noir and the aged Anning. In Gumpoldskirchen, rare varieties such as Zierfandler and Rotgipfler also grow—a piece of Austrian wine history that Fred consciously preserves.
Natural wine with respect
"Mit Achtung" (With Respect) is what Fred Loimer calls his natural wine line—out of respect for the oldest form of winemaking, which originates from Georgia.
With these orange wines, the white berries are fermented on the skins as in red wine production—unfined, unfiltered, and often entirely without added sulfur. The opulent Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung from vines up to 86 years old is an impressive example; the unsulfured Muskateller is a puristic one, and the Gemischter Satz is a complex one.
Alongside these stands the uncomplicated gluegglich line as natural wine for every day, in white, red, and rosé. "Intervene as little as possible" is Fred’s motto—healthy soils, hand-harvesting in small crates, spontaneous fermentation, and a lot of patience. You can taste where this philosophy leads in every glass.
Sparkling Wine of the Year 2023, quite impressive
Since 2013, Fred Loimer has also been producing artisanal sparkling wine (Winzersekt) using traditional bottle fermentation—thereby solidifying the old reputation of Langenlois as a stronghold for sparkling wine.
Together with Master of Wine Andreas Wickhoff, he produces the "Große Reserven" (Grand Reserves)—Blanc de Blancs without dosage, aged on the lees for years. The Brut Nature Große Reserve was named Sparkling Wine of the Year 2023 by Gault&Millau, the Extra Brut Reserve won gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards, and the Brut Rosé was voted the best sparkling rosé in Austria in 2023.
The wines also collect top marks from Falstaff, Wine Advocate, and Gault&Millau. You can find the entire sparkling selection under our sparkling wines. Truly impressive.
The sparkling wine for a toast
From the Loimer assortment, we recommend very different things depending on the occasion.
For a festive toast, we like the award-winning Große Reserve; for Wiener Schnitzel, the Grüner Veltliner Käferberg; and for balmy summer evenings, the fruity gluegglich Rosé. If you want to forgo alcohol entirely, reach for the sparkling grape juice. And if you want to discover biodynamics from another region, you can also find Weingut Philipp Wittmann from Rheinhessen with us.
Whether a classic Veltliner, an idiosyncratic orange wine, or a festive sparkling wine—it’s worth trying your way through Fred Loimer’s range. The entire breadth is available in our selection of wines. Let yourself be surprised.
