Weingut Pflüger, biodynamic organic wines from the Palatinate
The Pflüger winery in Bad Dürkheim is a biodynamic family estate in the Palatinate region. Alexander Pflüger has been running it in the second generation since 2010, working according to Demeter standards and producing organic wines that express their terroir in the glass. Doing less, letting more happen.
Weingut Pflüger stands for natural, biodynamic organic wines from the Palatinate. Located in Bad Dürkheim, opposite the saline, winemaker Alexander Pflüger produces white and red wines that honestly reflect their origin – from light quartzite estate wines to great single-vineyard wines. The entire winery is Demeter-certified and operates 100% organically.
Alexander has been running the family winery since 2010
Alexander Pflüger took over the winery from his father Bernd in 2010 and continues the family business philosophy with great passion. A return to traditional values, as Alexander describes it himself.
Bernd Pflüger was already one of the organic pioneers in the Palatinate and converted the vineyards to organic farming early on, around 1990, long before organic was a buzzword. His son followed this path consistently: from the 2008 vintage, the winery was able to offer all its wines in biodynamic Demeter quality. Tradition and a new beginning, in one hand.
Alexander's goal is to bring out the original character of every wine. To achieve this, he observes nature and understands what it needs – biodiversity and vitality in the vineyards. "Doing less, letting more happen" – this summarizes his attitude both in the cellar and in the vineyard.
The fact that the winery is located right opposite the Bad Dürkheim saline fits the picture perfectly. Salt and wine, both emerge here from what the Palatinate provides by nature – sun, water, and the power of the soil. The location grounds the wines before you have even tasted them.
From quartzite estate wine to the Fronhof vineyard
The range extends from light, everyday estate wines to great single-vineyard wines. The estate wines from quartzite and variegated sandstone are the starting point – fresh, mineral, and uncomplicated.
Among the white wines, you will find the juicy Riesling from variegated sandstone, the straightforward Chardonnay from quartzite, the racy Sauvignon Blanc, and the creamy Pinot Blanc. In addition, there is the pale Blanc de Noir, white-vinified from red Pinot Noir grapes.
The Chardonnay Quarzit in particular clearly shows what defines the Pflüger signature: not a lush, oaked Chardonnay, but an honest, straightforward type with notes of banana and mandarin, a fine creaminess, and the salty minerality of the quartzite soil. A white wine that combines the sun of the Palatinate and the coolness of the stone in one glass.
For the reds, the range spans from the convivial Cuvée Noir to the Fronhof Pinot Noir, a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from one of the oldest sites in the Mittelhaardt. You will find something for every occasion – from the light companion for a Wednesday evening to a character wine for a festive dinner. The Blanc de Noir is particularly lovely, showing that even a red grape can be light and delicate.
Every vintage tells the story a little differently. Sometimes a summer is warm and the fruit is lush, sometimes cool and the acidity is racy. These exact differences are preserved in the wine at Pflüger instead of being ironed out in the cellar. The entire selection is available to you in our white wines and red wines sections.
100 percent organic, Demeter in the glass
The Pflüger winery works 100% organically, and the Demeter portion of the wines is 95%. Biodynamics is not just a label here, but daily work in the vineyard.
Since the 2008 vintage, work has been consistently biodynamic: no artificial fertilizer, no herbicides, no insecticides, but instead a watchful eye on the passage of the seasons and the moon. In the press house opposite the saline in Bad Dürkheim, the grapes are gently pressed and the musts spontaneously fermented – with the natural yeasts that are already present on the berry skins.
On around 38 hectares around Bad Dürkheim, Ungstein, and Wachenheim, wines grow that do not mask their origin, but showcase it. The more cautious the intervention in the vineyard and cellar, the more clearly the vineyard site speaks from the glass in the end, Alexander repeatedly emphasizes.
Spontaneous fermentation requires patience and trust, because wild yeasts cannot be rushed. That is exactly the point: a wine that is given time tastes like its location in the end, not like a recipe. That is the quiet consistency behind every Pflüger wine.
Every site has its own character
Even if the vineyards are only a few kilometers apart, each site has its own microclimate and surprises with a variety of soils. It is precisely these differences that Alex Pflüger makes palpable.
Lush Ungstein wines, grown on heavy limestone soils, meet elegant Dürkheim wines from quartzite. Whether from the Dürkheimer Michelsberg, Spielberg, Fuchsmantel, or Fronhof, or from the Ungsteiner Herrenberg or the Königsbacher Ölberg – all showcase their origin in the best sense. Limestone, quartzite, variegated sandstone; every soil writes its own signature.
The variegated sandstone conducts heat well and produces ripe, spicy wines; the quartzite provides a fine salty minerality; the limestone ensures pressure and fullness. Anyone who tastes the wines side-by-side can almost taste the map of the Mittelhaardt like a journey from village to village.
The winery shares this joy in diversity with other Palatinate producers. If you like, take a look at the Weingut Rings, also from the Palatinate and also known for characterful wines.
Our recommendations for every occasion
Depending on the occasion, we recommend different wines from the range – for a social evening, for a fine dinner, or for a cool glass on the terrace.
The Riesling Buntsandstein belongs with hearty Palatinate cuisine, like Saumagen or tarte flambée. We like to serve the Blanc de Noir and the Sauvignon Blanc as an aperitif or with light summer dishes, and the Pinot Blanc with chicken and vegetables. And when things get serious and festive, the Fronhof Pinot Noir comes to the table – a single-vineyard wine that rewards patience.
A little tip on the side: give the white wines the right glass and the right temperature, well-chilled at 8 to 12 degrees, and the reds a half-hour of air.
Then the Pflüger wines will calmly show what they are made of, and the work of an entire year in the vineyard arrives in the glass. In the end, it’s not just a wine you taste, but an entire vineyard site.
As a gift, a Pflüger wine is always a joy, whether as a single bottle with a history or as a small selection across the vineyard sites. Anyone looking for an organic wine with character, which lets more happen than it does, is in exactly the right place with Alexander Pflüger.
Taste your way through the sites and varieties and be surprised by how differently the Palatinate can taste. Quite remarkable, what is created here from soil, sun, and patience.
