Weingut Klumpp, Organic Burgundy from the Kraichgau
The Klumpp winery in Bruchsal has been making wine in Baden since 1983, and has been consistently organic since 1996. Today, brothers Markus and Andreas Klumpp run the family estate, specializing in Pinot and Riesling from the limestone and loess soils of the Kraichgau. Multi-award winning, from estate wines to single-vineyard bottlings.
Weingut Klumpp stands for fine organic wines from the Kraichgau in Baden. Founded in 1983 by Ulrich and Marietta Klumpp, it all started in a backyard garage. Today, their sons Markus and Andreas produce Pinot, Riesling, and Blaufränkisch on their own estate, wines that reflect their origin and vintage. Organic since 1996, hand-harvested and gently crafted in the cellar.
1983, a backyard garage in Bruchsal
What began in 1983 as a small project by Ulrich and Marietta Klumpp is now one of the finest organic wineries in Baden. The Kraichgau, the gentle hilly landscape between the Odenwald and the Black Forest, is their home—a mosaic of limestone, marl, and loess.
The parents founded the Klumpp winery in Bruchsal and vinified their first wines in a backyard garage. In 1990, the business moved into its own new building, and since 1996, shortly before the turn of the millennium, the family has been working consistently organically—a rarity in Baden at the time and a courageous step.
Markus Klumpp has been responsible for the wines since 2004, and his brother Andreas joined him in 2010, ensuring top-quality grapes from the vineyard. Both studied viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim in the Rheingau and then gained experience in Austria, California, South Africa, and France. They know the great Burgundies of France as well as the cool-climate wines of the New World and bring the best of both to the Kraichgau.
You can taste this perspective beyond their own backyard in their wines: internationally trained, yet deeply rooted in the Kraichgau. The sons continue what their parents built with a steady hand and high standards, without losing the character of the estate.
Estate wine, village wine, single-vineyard wine
The winery's range follows a clear logic: from the uncomplicated estate wine to the village wine and the great single-vineyard wine, almost always from the Pinot family.
The entry level consists of the estate wines: the fresh Pinot Gris, the dry Riesling, and the mineral Pinot Blanc from the Kirchberg steep slope. They are juicy, clear, and made for every day without ever tasting generic. This also includes the rare Auxerrois and the light Cuvée Blanc, both uncomplicated and full of fruit.
One step above that is the dense Pinot Gris Tonmergel, a village wine from red clay marl. The pinnacle is represented by the unfiltered single-vineyard wines: the elegant Weiherberg Pinot Noir from a shell limestone plateau and the multi-layered Himmelreich Blaufränkisch. Each vineyard site has its own sound: shell limestone, clay marl, calcareous sandstone, and loess are reflected directly in the glass.
The house's strength lies in its white wines—Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay—but Klumpp also shows class with its reds: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Blaufränkisch are never heavy here, but rather fine and elegant. This cool, precise signature runs throughout the entire range.
Added to this is a juicy rosé for the summer and the Hand in Hand series, a collaboration with the Meyer-Näkel winery from the Ahr. Markus Klumpp is married to winemaker Meike Näkel; the two met while studying in Geisenheim—this connection led to a joint line between two families.
Organic since 1996, gravity instead of pumps
At Klumpp, craftsmanship means three things: harvesting by hand, working without pumps, and giving the wines time.
The Klumpp winery has been organic-certified according to DE-ÖKO-039 since 1996; the grapes are selectively hand-harvested in several passes. Nothing is pumped in the cellar—grapes and mash reach the fermentation tanks solely by gravity, which protects the fruit and keeps the tannins fine.
Depending on the wine, it is aged in stainless steel tanks, 500-liter tonneaus, or French oak barriques, often with long lees contact and regular batonnage. This gives the wines richness and a creamy melt without stripping them of their freshness. In the vineyard, early leaf removal and yield reduction ensure that the grapes arrive in the cellar ripe and concentrated.
The vineyards are located around Bruchsal and Unteröwisheim, many on steep southern slopes that can only be cultivated by hand. This very effort in the best parcels is what distinguishes a great wine from a good one and is the reason why the single-vineyard wines tell their story of origin so clearly. Preserving old vines is also part of it, as the vines that have grown over decades give the wines their depth.
A wine should show origin and vintage, the brothers are convinced—and that is exactly what you taste in every glass. Organic here is not a marketing concept, but the foundation of everything: healthy soils, lively vines, clear wines. Green manure and herbs grow between the vine rows, promoting soil life and making synthetic pesticides unnecessary.
Discovery of the Year and Pinot Gris Trophy
The trade press discovered the Klumpp winery long ago, from Eichelmann to Falstaff.
In 2014, the Eichelmann wine guide named the winery "Discovery of the Year," and today it lists it with five stars as a world-class winery. In 2021, Falstaff magazine awarded Markus and Andreas Klumpp the Pinot Gris Trophy for the best Pinot Gris of the vintage.
In addition, they hold four red grapes in Gault & Millau as well as four stars each in Vinum and Falstaff. Such ratings do not come by chance, but year after year—a sign of consistency in the cellar. For a winery that began in a garage about forty years ago, this is a wonderful confirmation. Hats off.
From everyday wine to the grand cru
Here you will find the right wine for almost every occasion, from a quick glass to a festive bottle. Whether as a gift, for dinner, or to give away—the selection makes the choice easy.
It is precisely this range that makes Klumpp so impressive. For the terrace and a balmy evening, the Rosé or the fresh Pinot Gris are perfect, both well-chilled and uncomplicated. For a good meal, we like to reach for the mature Pinot Blanc or one of the single-vineyard wines, which gain even more with a few years of aging. The Riesling and Auxerrois are fine companions for light summer cuisine, while the Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir are the choice for game and braised dishes.
As a gift for wine lovers, a single-vineyard wine from shell limestone always makes an impression, and if you like, simply place an estate wine and a single-vineyard wine side-by-side—the difference in origin can be easily tasted in the glass. In summer, go for the rosé; in winter, a robust red for slow cooking.
Simply try your way through the range, from estate wine to the grand cru, and discover other white wines from our cellar. Let yourself be surprised by how much Baden can fit into a single glass. There is something here for every taste and every occasion.
