Fragrant Sauvignon Blanc South Styria from Weingut Sattlerhof
Sauvignon Blanc South Styria from Weingut Sattlerhof is the estate's regional wine, crafted from hand-picked grapes from the steep slopes around Gamlitz and Eichberg. It showcases the cool, herbaceous side of the grape variety while remaining light enough for a long evening.
Sauvignon Blanc South Styria is the dry regional wine from the Sattler family in Sernau near Gamlitz, in the southernmost tip of Styria. Andreas and Alexander Sattler cultivate 33 hectares of vineyards there, and this wine captures all the freshness that the steep slopes at 350 to 450 meters above sea level provide.
Green asparagus, citrus freshness, and meadow herbs
In the glass, the wine has the aroma of green asparagus and sugar snap peas, underpinned by a bright citrus freshness that makes for a very delicate opening without masking anything.
With a little air, crisp apples emerge. Then come those aromatic meadow herbs that South Styria so reliably imparts to its wines. On the palate, the Sauvignon Blanc remains lean and lively, carried by an acidity that never feels sharp, but rather lifts the wine from below.
It is dry through and through, without lacking anything, and light enough that a second glass needs no negotiation. The bouquet always remains a touch cooler than the room temperature, making it a reliable companion in summer.
A wine for asparagus and long evenings
Delicate spring dishes are the obvious pairing, such as asparagus with brown butter, a young leaf salad, or a mild goat cheese without much else on the side. Steamed fish also pairs well with this type of freshness.
It stands just as well on its own, well chilled, as the day comes to an end. No one needs to get back into the kitchen for that. Those who have something heartier on their plate will find a fuller-bodied partner with woody notes in the Morillon Gamlitz from the same cellar.
The 2024 vintage will be in its prime until 2029, so this bottle is in no hurry. If you leave it for longer, the wine will lose some of its green notes and gain yellow fruit, which suits it just as well.
Steep slopes above Gamlitz and a label from the family
The grapes for this Sauvignon Blanc grow in the vineyards around Gamlitz and Eichberg, on sand, gravel, and shell limestone. They are harvested exclusively by hand and in small crates so that the berries arrive in the cellar undamaged.
In South Styria, the slopes are so steep that machines would have no business there anyway. It is precisely this steepness that provides the cool nights to which the wine owes its freshness. It is fermented in steel tanks and aged in a classic style, without any wood, so that the aromatics remain as clear as they come from the vineyard.
Since the 2021 vintage, all the estate's wines have been certified biodynamic, and the winery itself describes this one as fragrant, lively, and full of drinking pleasure. The light, calm label was designed by Manuela Sattler, daughter of the house and a graphic designer.
