Sattlerhof Weissburgunder Gamlitz 2024 with citrus freshness and grated almonds
The Weissburgunder Gamlitz 2024 from the Sattlerhof winery is the latest regional wine of this variety from the estate, grown on the steep slopes around the municipality and fermented in steel tanks. It combines bright citrus freshness with the scent of freshly grated almonds while remaining highly refined.
Weissburgunder Gamlitz 2024 is a dry regional wine from the Südsteiermark DAC, which the Sattler family produces from fully ripe grapes grown in their own vineyards. Alexander Sattler manages the winery together with his brother, and the vines for this wine are between 15 and 35 years old. The estate has been working biodynamically since the 2021 vintage, certified by Lacon.
Citrus freshness and freshly grated almonds
The first impression is bright and citrusy, a freshness that is reminiscent of grated zest rather than juice. Behind this lies the scent of freshly grated almonds, both floury and sweet. A Weissburgunder from cool altitudes rarely shows intensity, and this one does not strive for it either.
On the palate, the wine is highly refined and elegant, with those delicate hints of black tea that the winery itself emphasizes. Its play of acidity remains refreshing rather than sharp, ensuring the bottle is empty faster than expected. The estate calls this wine wonderfully Styrian, and it carries itself exactly that way.
It is dry from beginning to end without lacking any body. The vintage is in its best form until 2030, after which the citrus note recedes and the almond gains weight.
Pullet breast, pumpkin wedges and a quiet evening
Juicy roasted light poultry is the winery's recommendation, and a pullet breast with crispy skin immediately shows why this is true. The wine absorbs the roasting juices without competing against them.
Asparagus, roasted pumpkin wedges, and sugar snap peas form the vegetarian selection that belongs together in Styria anyway. A young fresh goat cheese goes in the same direction, as long as it is not seasoned too strongly. Even a risotto with pumpkin finds its counterpart in this freshness, without letting the wine disappear alongside it.
The older Weissburgunder Gamlitz 2022 stands alongside it for a calmer tone, while this vintage takes on the fresher side. For you, this means two bottles from the same slopes that accompany the same roast from different angles.
Mica in the quartz sand above Gamlitz
The vineyards are located on steep slopes, 350 to 450 meters above sea level, on crystalline quartz sands. Mica flashes within them as soon as the sun moves over the slope, and the cool microclimate shapes the character of this wine at least as strongly.
Fully ripe grapes are harvested selectively by hand, vine by vine, and without any machinery on the slope. Fermentation and maturation take place in steel tanks, where four to five months of fine lees aging give the slender structure its creaminess. It belongs in the glass well-chilled, but not ice-cold, because the almond note would simply be lost.
Wood does not come into play anywhere with this wine, so that the fruit retains exactly that clarity which the vineyard has given it. The entire range of the estate can be found in the overview of the Sattlerhof winery, and those browsing through the Austrian wines will find the neighbors from Gamlitz and Eichberg as well.
