Pinot Gris from loess, creamy and dry from the Palatinate
The Philipp Kuhn Pinot Gris from loess 2024 is a dry white wine from the Palatinate, grown on loess soils around Großkarlbach. Creamy, clear, with a fine minerality. Not a lush, oaky heavyweight, but a straightforward Pinot Gris with finesse.
Philipp Kuhn Pinot Gris from loess 2024 is a dry Pinot Gris from the Palatinate that derives its character from the loess soil. The vines grow around Großkarlbach, on fine-grained, calcareous loess. Let yourself be surprised by this melt-in-the-mouth quality, which feels so creamy yet remains clear and lean.
Ripe apricot, apple, a hint of lychee
In the glass, the Pinot Gris appears straw-yellow and clear. The nose offers aromas of yellow fruits, ripe apricot, apple, and a touch of lychee.
On the palate, it is creamy, smooth, and mineral, with fine nuttiness and gentle acidity. With 3.4 g/l residual sugar and 5.3 g/l acidity, it remains dry and straightforward, with the fine minerality of the loess returning in the finish. A white wine with both melt and backbone.
This is the tension that makes the Pinot Gris so appealing: it is flattering with its creamy texture while remaining clear enough to never feel heavy. A wine that is as suitable for a meal as it is for a quiet glass in the evening.
With veal, creamy pasta, mild cheese
Pinot Gris likes hearty, but not overly heavy cuisine. Pork, veal, creamy pasta, and mild cheese are its favorite companions.
Served at 10 to 12 degrees, it pairs beautifully with creamed veal, pasta with mushrooms, or aged Gouda in the evening. Its creamy nature picks up creamy sauces wonderfully and maintains a good balance against strong seasoning. For those who want to taste more from the estate, opt for the lean Pinot Blanc or the dry Riesling Tradition from the same cellar.
What the loess does to the wine
Loess is a fine-grained, calcareous soil that regulates the vines' water supply evenly. This is precisely what gives the Pinot Gris its elegant texture and the calm, creamy flow on the palate.
Philipp Kuhn harvests the grapes in the Palatinate by hand and vinifies the wine dry, with a great sense of touch for fruit, structure, and minerality. The more careful the vinification, the clearer the origin remains in the glass. "It has to be dry," is Philipp's philosophy for all his wines.
He bottled his first vintage in 1992; today, the estate manages around 40 hectares and has been a VDP member since 2008. With 12.5% vol., the Pinot Gris from loess is a VDP.Gutswein for every day. You can find more from the Palatinate among the other wines from Philipp Kuhn.
Served too cool, it loses its creamy warmth
At 10 to 12 degrees, the Pinot Gris shows its melt most beautifully; served too cool, it loses its creamy warmth. It is produced vegan and is a reliable food companion for the whole week. It tastes best freshly opened, but keeps well in the fridge for one to two days. Creamy, clear, uncomplicated.
