Freistil Muskateller, a fragrant summer wine from the Palatinate
The Philipp Kuhn Freistil 2024 is a dry white wine made from Yellow Muscat and Gold Muscat, grown in the Palatinate. Fragrant, light, with restrained acidity. Not a sweet, floral cliché, but a dry-vinified aromatic wine for every day.
Philipp Kuhn Freistil Muskateller 2024 is a fragrant, dry white wine from the Palatinate, made from 100% Muscat grapes. In the past, the Freistil was bottled as a cuvée with Silvaner, but today the aromatic variety stands entirely on its own. Let yourself be captivated by this scent, which smells of summer the moment you pour it.
Elderflower, gooseberry, fresh hay
Muscat is one of the oldest cultivated grape varieties in existence, with more than 200 known variants. In the Freistil, it smells expressive and clear.
On the nose, it unfolds a bouquet of elderflowers, gooseberry, a hint of mango and nutmeg, plus meadow herbs and freshly mown hay. On the palate, it is juicy, light, and animating, with just 11% ABV. The acidity remains in the background, allowing the fruit to take center stage. That is how summer smells in a glass.
That is exactly where the appeal lies: the Freistil Muskateller smells exuberant but tastes lean and dry. A wine that greets you before you even take the first sip.
An aperitif that craves spice
The Freistil Muskateller is a convivial aperitif and a reliable food companion that enjoys pairing with bold spices. It is particularly fond of Asian cuisine and asparagus.
Serve it well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees with a green Thai curry, fried asparagus with herbs, or on a mild evening without any special occasion. If you would like to taste more from the winery, try the crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the Palatinate or the creamy Grauer Burgunder from loess soil.
Dry-vinified by Philipp Kuhn
Philipp Kuhn harvests the Freistil Muskateller by hand in the Palatinate and vinifies it consistently dry, unlike the sweet cliché often associated with Muscat. Gold Muscat and Yellow Muscat each bring their own unique aromatic profile.
In the cellar, the aromatics remain the top priority: cool fermentation, gentle maturation, and early bottling so the fragrance arrives fresh in the glass. The earlier the bottling, the crisper the fruit. "It has to be dry," is how Philipp treats all his wines.
He bottled his first vintage in 1992; today, the winery manages around 40 hectares and has been a member of the VDP since 2008. With 5.0 g/l of residual sugar and 7.2 g/l of acidity, the Freistil is an uncomplicated entry point. You can find more from the Palatinate among the other wines from Philipp Kuhn.
As an aperitif, it leaves you wanting more
Well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees, the Freistil Muskateller shows off its fragrant bouquet at its best. It is vegan-vinified and a light companion for warm evenings on the terrace. Poured as an aperitif before a meal, the Muscat builds anticipation for the next course. It tastes best freshly opened, but will keep well in the refrigerator for one or two days. Simply summer in a glass.
