Engel Praline Box by Sawade as a Christmas Gift
The Engel Praline Box by Sawade is the Christmas edition of the classic ten-piece box, 115g in five varieties from Berlin. Each piece is individually coated and then decorated by hand, and the midnight blue lid features an angel with a trumpet.
Engel Praline Box is the alcohol-free Christmas selection from Sawade in Berlin-Reinickendorf, containing ten pieces in dark paper cups on a golden base. The angel on the lid is accompanied by a golden halo and a dove with a star, meaning this box requires no wrapping paper during the Advent season.
White chocolate with a dark swirl
The lid lifts off with a soft pull, revealing the golden base beneath. The most striking piece is round, white, and topped with a hand-piped swirl of dark couverture. The pieces are arranged in two rows of five, ensuring two pralines of each variety are included.
Below lies a delicate truffle with genuine Bourbon vanilla, creamy and with that slightly powdery sweetness that accentuates a white coating. Then it gets darker, as the truffle brittle combines soft ganache with house-made hazelnut brittle, and the milk chocolate leaf brittle provides a satisfying crunch.
The Königin Luise (Queen Louise) layers brittle, two types of nougat, butter truffle, and marzipan, and is one of the company's award-winning pieces. Next to it lies a milk chocolate square topped with a whole pistachio. Soft, combed, brittle – the texture varies with every piece, and none of these fillings contain alcohol.
Brittle made in-house
Sugar is melted until it caramelizes to a light brown, then roasted hazelnuts are added and the mixture is spread out on the table.
The thinner it is spread, the finer the brittle snaps later in the mouth, and the quieter the sound of the snap. This is precisely what distinguishes the splintery leaf brittle from the soft brittle in the center of the Königin Luise, even though both come from the same batch.
Each praline is then individually coated and subsequently decorated; because this is done by hand, the line is never in the exact same place twice. White couverture is the most difficult to work with because it sets faster and retains any sign of hesitation. Those who look closely will find ten slightly different swirls in a Sawade box.
Ten pralines under a midnight blue lid
The Angel box pairs well with baked apple tea, hot milk, and an afternoon when the lights come on early outside. Whoever gives it as a gift also presents the motif itself, and the lid is often kept for a pinboard rather than ending up in the recycling bin.
Ten pieces are enough for a small group and are easy to manage, making this size perfect as a gift when a full-sized box of chocolates would be too much. Kept in a dark cupboard at 15 to 18 degrees, the white couverture stays bright; near a heater, it quickly takes on a gray tone. Hazelnut, pistachio, and almond are clearly identifiable in this selection, and the genuine Bourbon vanilla in the white truffle is the only ingredient that stays hidden.
