Organic Chestnut Honey from the Palatinate Forest – tart & spicy

The organic chestnut honey from Die Honigwanderer comes from the Palatinate Forest Nature Park, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany. Dark in the jar, intense in taste, slightly bitter on the finish. Not a sweet spring honey – a tart varietal honey for lovers of bold aromas.

Organic chestnut honey is a dark, intense varietal honey made from the nectar of the sweet chestnut, harvested by an organic partner apiary of Die Honigwanderer in June and July in the chestnut forests of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The beehives are located at coordinates N49° 5' 21.12" E7° 57' 39.19" – in the middle of one of the oldest chestnut regions in Central Europe, naturalized by the Romans around 2,000 years ago.

Dark, intense, and slightly bitter

In the jar, the chestnut honey displays a dark amber color; upon tasting, it unfolds a tart-spicy aroma with malty notes and a slightly bitter finish. If you love aromatic honeys, you will find your favorite companion here – this organic honey is malty, spicy, resinous, and certainly not mild. You can recognize it by its dark tone in the jar.

Chestnut honey remains liquid for a long time because its fructose content is around 50 percent, which is higher than in many other varietal honeys. Its aroma is reminiscent of dark caramel, almond skin, and a warm summer breeze in the forest. A varietal honey with personality that holds its own on your breakfast table.

Pairs with hard cheese and game dishes

Organic chestnut honey is particularly effective when paired with aged mountain cheese, mature Parmigiano Reggiano, or blue cheeses like Gorgonzola. The tart honey interacts with the spiciness, and both benefit from the flavor profile. It also pairs well with game dishes like saddle of venison or wild boar; a teaspoon in your gravy complements the dark aromas.

For a sweet-tart vinaigrette for winter salads with walnuts, a scant teaspoon is enough, along with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Or simply on a slice of dark rye bread with salted butter – the Palatinate in a single bite. A recommendation for varietal honey collectors from our honey assortment.

The chestnut tree blooms for only three weeks in summer

In June and July, the partner apiary places its colonies in the Palatinate Forest, where the chestnut trees bloom. The window of time is narrow: three weeks, no more, and highly weather-dependent. If it rains during the bloom, the harvest is meager. If the weather hits the mark, the trees provide enough nectar for a whole year's supply of varietal honey, as Simon describes the nectar flow concept.

Behind the brand Die Honigwanderer are Stefanie and Simon Weber, who have been curating a network of organic partner apiaries across Germany since 2024 – every varietal honey comes from a clearly defined nectar region. The Palatinate Forest Nature Park is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany, covering around 180,000 hectares. It is spun gently and not heated. The 250-gram jar contains a honey that cannot be reproduced if the bees are located elsewhere.

Its tart character requires small quantities

Stored cool and dark at 10 to 18 degrees, the organic chestnut honey stays fresh the longest. Serve it in a small bowl on a cheese board so your guests can portion it out – a scant teaspoon per piece of cheese. Those who are won over by the tart character will find another dark honey with depth in the organic forest honey from Die Honigwanderer from the Welzheimer Forest. The two side-by-side on a cheese board turn any Sunday evening into a small tasting session, which you can supplement with a piece of pear or apple.
