Il Valtènesi 2022 from Pasini San Giovanni for everyday enjoyment

Il Valtènesi 2022 is the final vintage that Pasini San Giovanni bottled under this name, an organic red wine made from 100% Groppello from the western shore of Lake Garda. Previous vintages were designated as a "wine for every day" by the Slow Wine guide, while the 2022 vintage received an award from the wine magazine Merum.

Il Valtènesi is a Groppello from Pasini San Giovanni, a certified organic winery in Raffa di Puegnago above the western shore of Lake Garda, bottled as a Riviera del Garda Classico DOC. It is vinified as a single-varietal red wine and aged in steel tanks. The 2022 vintage has 13.0 percent alcohol. With the following 2023 vintage, the same wine was given the new name Frontecasa.

The last vintage with the old label

On the label of the Il Valtènesi 2022, below the name and vintage, is the addition "da uve Groppello" (from Groppello grapes), and with this vintage, the old name is retired.

The name is also an indication of origin, as Valtènesi is the name of the hills on the western shore of Lake Garda where the grapes grow. Therefore, the word appears twice on the label: once as the name of the wine and once in the designation of origin below it. Pasini San Giovanni refers to Valtènesi and Valtènesi Chiaretto as the two wines that express the region—one red and the other a rosé.

The capsule features the logo of the Vignaioli Indipendenti, an association of independent winemakers. Its members grow their own grapes, bottle them in their own cellars, and sell their own wine.

A red wine for every day

For four consecutive vintages, from 2016 to 2019, the Italian wine guide Slow Wine awarded the Il Valtènesi as a "Top Wine Vino Quotidiano" – a wine for every day.

Spices and lightness, that is how the winery summarizes the character of this refreshing red wine from Lake Garda. The aroma is reminiscent of red berries, the body remains lean, and the fine spice invites another sip. Writing about the wines of the Valtènesi, Pasini notes they have a lean body and strong character, and are warm yet light at the same time.

That is why it appears on the table on an ordinary Tuesday just as much as on the weekend. The 2017 vintage also won gold at Millésime Bio in 2020. For the 2022 vintage itself, a recognition from the wine magazine Merum was added in 2025.

A snack with salumi and savory cheese

For a snack with salumi—Italian cured meats like salami and coppa—and a piece of savory cheese, the Il Valtènesi is the obvious counterpart.

Cured meats and savory cheese are among the foods that Pasini San Giovanni recommends for this Groppello. The board should also include bread, a few olives, and some pickled vegetables. An aged Pecorino provides the spice that the wine picks up. If you like, you can add a few slices of cold roast veal, as the winery also lists light meats as a pairing.

You can find the same wine in its next vintage and with its new name as Frontecasa Valtènesi 2023. As a rosé, this Groppello appears on the table as RosaGreen. Further red wines can be found under Red Wine and the entire assortment at Pasini San Giovanni.
