ND Glögg Gin Liqueur from Norrbottens Destilleri with Meadowsweet and Cinnamon

ND Glögg Gin Liqueur from Norrbottens Destilleri is a Swedish spirit glögg with 15 percent alcohol, in which hand-picked meadowsweet meets gin and classic glögg spices. Unlike the mulled wine to which it owes its name, it does not go on the stove.

ND Glögg Gin Liqueur is the floral liqueur from Norrbottens Destilleri in Töre, Northern Sweden, referred to as Älgörtsglögg on the label. The 500ml bottle is wrapped in paper the color of unbleached cardboard, covered in a white pattern of snow crystals and mountain peaks, and the liqueur shimmers a rosy amber in the glass. A winter drink whose heart comes from a summer meadow.

Meadowsweet, which the Swedes call elk herb

Meadowsweet is called Älgört in Sweden—"elk herb"—and it blooms at midsummer in the damp meadows of Norrbotten.

Its white flower clusters have a honey-sweet scent with an almond note, similar to elderflower, only warmer and denser. They are picked by hand during the bright nights when the sun barely dips below the horizon. The plant is botanically known as *Filipendula ulmaria*; it belongs to the rose family and can be found along stream banks and ditches throughout Europe.

The idea behind it reverses the usual order, because instead of sweetening a finished gin, Dennis distilled the gin specifically to suit this blossom and built the glögg around it. In doing so, two Swedish traditions meet that have never stood in the same glass before.

On the nose, the blossom is at the forefront, followed by cardamom, cinnamon, lemon, and star anise. On the palate, the liqueur is sweet but never cloying, because the lemon provides a counterpoint and the gin lays a juniper base beneath the sweetness. In the finish, the spice remains, and the floral notes linger for a long time.

Ice-cold in the glass, not on the stove

The name is a little misleading, as glögg is known to be served hot, but this one belongs in a chilled glass.

With 15 percent alcohol, it is a liqueur and not a punch, and heat would carry away the floral notes, leaving only the spices behind. Well-chilled, it is served neat in a small glass after a meal; over plenty of ice with a slice of lemon, it becomes a long drink; and topped up with tonic or prosecco, it makes a light aperitif.

It works just as well in cocktails because it brings both sweetness and spice and handles both well. Those looking for a dry counterpart will find it in the ND Mountain Dry Gin from the same distillery. Other bottles of this kind can be found in the Liqueur section nearby.

A summer meadow for the dark season

This liqueur is distilled in Töre on the Bay of Bothnia, where damp meadows reach down to the water.

Its botanicals are gathered along the Kalix River, which rises in the Kebnekaise mountains and flows far to the south into the Baltic Sea. What grows between source and mouth can end up in one of his bottles, and the meadowsweet is the summer part of this collection. Harvesting takes place over just a few days each year, as the blossom does not last long.

The industry has confirmed multiple times that the craftsmanship at this house is top-tier, and in 2020, competitions in New York and Berlin named Norrbottens Destilleri the Swedish Gin Distillery of the Year.

The entire range from Norrbottens Destilleri can be found under one roof with us. A summer meadow in a winter glass, served ice-cold—that is how it’s done.

Norrbottens Destilleri
