2026 Ville Bleue Vintage Sardines by Les Mouettes d'Arvor

The 2026 Ville Bleue vintage sardines from Les Mouettes d'Arvor are packaged in a tin that the company commissions a Concarneau-based artist to design anew for each vintage. Inside, robust, seasonal sardines are hand-packed in extra virgin olive oil.

2026 Ville Bleue vintage sardines are the collector's edition from Les Mouettes d'Arvor in Concarneau, the Breton port town known in France as the "blue city." The name comes from the blue nets of the sardine fishermen and the blue fish themselves. Each edition features a different design and is limited to its vintage.

Robust and well-rounded on dark bread

On dark bread with butter, the Ville Bleue tastes robust and well-rounded, with meaty flesh and a long, salty finish.

The extra virgin olive oil permeates the fish, making it succulent without being heavy. Pickled onions, young salad greens, and a glass of chilled Muscadet pair well with them. On a hot baked potato with crème fraîche, the sardine practically falls apart on its own.

Warmed briefly in its own tin, it becomes almost creamy and can be spread on toasted bread. Even cold and straight from the tin, with a spoonful of its oil drizzled over bread, it makes for a complete appetizer.

A painter from Concarneau on the lid

For each edition, the company prints the work of a Concarneau artist on the tin—a new image for every vintage.

This makes the Ville Bleue a double find: once on the plate and once on the shelf. Collectors line up the vintages and read the years like a series of pictures. If you are giving them as a gift, you hardly need to say a word, as the design on the lid already tells a story of the coast, the harbor, and the boats.

Once a vintage is sold out, that design is never reissued, making the tins highly sought after by enthusiasts across Europe. Some never even open them, preferring to display them on a shelf with the others.

The longer it rests, the softer it gets

Robust sardines age exceptionally well, and the Ville Bleue is specifically made for this.

When stored in a cool, dark place, the fish becomes more tender year after year as the olive oil slowly permeates it and, in return, absorbs its flavor. Giving the tin a turn every few months ensures the oil covers all sides. After two or three years, the texture is nearly buttery soft, and the same tin will taste noticeably different than it does today.

Additional vintage sardines and sardines from France are available nearby, in case one tin just isn't enough.

From the port of Concarneau

The fish arrive fresh from the boats, are cleaned individually by hand, lightly seared, and packed into the tins the following day. No more than a day passes between landing and sealing the lid, and this freshness is the foundation for everything that happens inside the tin afterward. At Les Mouettes d'Arvor, you will find more canned fish from Brittany, including the 2023 vintage sardines, which have already begun their maturation process.
