Their nearly 100 hectares of vines grow on both sides of Lake Neusiedl, in the Neusiedlersee and Leithaberg regions. The winery has been Demeter-certified since 2006 and is a member of the Pannobile and respekt-BIODYN associations. Falstaff named Gernot Heinrich Winemaker of the Year in 2000.

<!--nl--
A place by the lake and the slopes opposite

Gols is situated on the flat, warm, and windy eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, while the Leitha Mountains rise up directly opposite. The entire winery spans the space between these two very different worlds.

On the Gols side, you will find humus-rich heath soils, sandy loam, and red Danube gravel. This is home to the single vineyards Gabarinza, Salzberg, and Rosenberg, and two of these names reappear in the product range as wine names. In Austria, that is a statement in itself, because a vineyard site only becomes a label when it delivers something distinctive every single year.

The lake acts like a giant heater, storing the warmth of the day and releasing it at night; this balance grants the grapes a long, calm ripening period. In addition, there is the wind across the plain, which allows the grapes to dry off quickly after damp nights. It takes care of a good portion of the work that is done by spraying elsewhere.

The other side of the lake is cooler, steeper, and geologically older. That is where the "Alter Berg" vineyard near Winden am See is located on calcareous sandstone, Leitha limestone, and Tertiary shell limestone, along with the "Edelgraben" near Breitenbrunn on mica and quartzite schist, and the "Hackelsberg" near Jois. Limestone and schist give the wines that coolness and saline quality that the warm Gols soils alone cannot provide.

For a winery to cultivate both shores is not a matter of course in Burgenland, but a decision with consequences. It incurs travel time and forces the harvest to take place at different times at two locations. In return, the same Blaufränkisch can be vinified once as warm and broad, and once as cool and taut, without changing the variety. That difference is then in the glass rather than in the brochure.

<!--nl--
Biodynamic here means, above all, letting be

"We work with nature, not against it" is the phrase the winery uses to summarize its approach. In the vineyard, this translates primarily into a great deal of manual labor that no tractor can replace.

Biodynamic viticulture goes beyond organic, because while it avoids synthetic sprays and fertilizers, it also incorporates compost preparations and cover crops between the vine rows. Above all, it involves a different perspective that views the operation as a cycle rather than a series of individual work steps. Animals are as much a part of this cycle as a vegetable garden, and the winery describes this itself under the heading of "taking the liberty" (sich die Freyheit zu nehmen).

This is monitored by two independent bodies: Demeter, the oldest biodynamic association, and respekt-BIODYN, which brings together biodynamic winemakers from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Hungary. The responsible organic inspection body bears the number AT-BIO-402 and appears as the final line under every product description in this range.

The restraint continues in the cellar, as the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously, using only the yeasts that arrive from the vineyard. Many wines mature in large used wooden barrels rather than new barriques, which would impart their own flavor. Some bottles are even sold without any added sulfur, which causes the results to fluctuate from year to year, and that is precisely the point.

<!--nl--
Blaufränkisch as the spearhead

Red varieties define the estate, and Blaufränkisch leads the way. Among them, Salzberg is the signature wine, joined by Gabarinza, Alter Berg, and the Pannobile.

Pannobile is not a vineyard, but a group of winemaker families based around Gols. Each bottles a wine under this shared name, made exclusively from indigenous varieties, and the vintage is approved by the group rather than the individual winery. Gernot Heinrich is one of the members who introduced the biodynamic concept to this group.

The estate’s white wine offering is broader than its red reputation might suggest.
