It all began with an idea, a few experiments, and a stand at a street food market where Jonathan sold fajitas, Mexican flatbreads with hot sauce, and people were so enthusiastic about his sauce that they wanted to buy it for their homes. In Neukölln, he ran a small restaurant on Weserstraße, in whose kitchen he cooked the sauce and bottled it into small pocket-sized bottles to sell.

Hot sauce with a hot name – Crazy Bastard Sauce

Clearly, a hot sauce like this also needs a hot name: Crazy Bastard Sauce! And the name says it all. As creative as Jonathan is, other recipes followed the original Habanero Tomatillo sauce, such as the even hotter Trinidad Scorpion Clementine, the Scotch Bonnet Caribbean Spices, or the somewhat milder Jalapeño Date. This time, it wasn’t a stand at a street food market, but one at the Grüne Woche trade fair, where Jonathan presented his hot sauces to an international trade audience and found enthusiastic customers.

Now, nine years after the founding of Crazy Bastard Sauce, there are seven great sauces with various levels of heat, and the original, Crazy Bastard Sauce Habanero Tomatillo, has already been honored with five international awards, such as the Great Taste Award, the Hot Pepper Award, and the World Hot Sauce Award. Yet, Jonathan O’Reilly, the Irishman in Berlin, still has a small shop next to his restaurant, the Crazy Bastard Kitchen, in Neukölln.
